A new approach to multivariable quantitative feedback theory

Myoung Soo Park, University of Massachusetts Amherst

Abstract

During the past three decades, several methods have been developed for multivariable feedback design within the framework of Quantitative Feedback Theory. They are all characterized, and limited, by the use of loop transmission inversion. This dissertation develops a new design approach within this framework leading to a new method which does not involve loop transmission inversion. For square plants, the design algorithms in the new method are shown to be mathematically equivalent (modulus division by the plant determinant) to the algorithms employed by inversion-based methods. The feedback design for a robust performance problem involving a commercial compact disc mechanism and its successful implementation illustrates a realistic application of the new method.
