Radiation condition development for a marching algorithm with applications to elliptic model problems in underwater acoustics

Li Wang, University of Massachusetts Amherst

Abstract

The dissertation involves the study of the use of the Error Vector Propagation (EVP) method in the solution of elliptic model problems in underwater acoustics. It is first discussed that the EVP method can be directly applied to solve the finite region problem. Then the marching scheme for solving the infinite region problem is presented as a new method by the theoretical formulation and numerical implementation of a radiation condition. As an important part of the thesis, the existence and uniqueness of the solutions in the marching scheme are proved. Finally, the marching scheme is demonstrated by the numerical examples.
