Northside Neighborhood Center: Alternative Design Proposals

Citations
Abstract
The Northside neighborhood center, a local commercial hub serving the Prospect Hill and Union Street communities in Westfield, reflects the broader historical and cultural identity of the city. This study addresses two primary issues facing the area: physical and economic decline, and significant traffic congestion along North Elm Street. In response, the study proposes alternative landscape improvement designs aimed at enhancing the interaction between vehicles and pedestrians, revitalizing open spaces, and encouraging the adaptive reuse of existing structures. The redevelopment strategy emphasizes preserving the historic character of the district while fostering an environment conducive to future economic growth. The study is organized into three main parts: a statement of human-centered goals and redevelopment methodology, an analysis of current conditions in the Northside commercial district, and interpretive planning recommendations.
