Abstract
Cittaslow grew out of the Slow Food movement, which started in Italy after the first McDonald’s was opened at the Spanish Square in Rome in 1986. Today, there are over 280 Cittaslow towns worldwide. Cities can apply to be certified. The application demonstrates how well the town practices seven sustainability-related areas. Cittaslow USA (CUSA) is exploring expansion in the United States (US). Because towns in Anglo-Saxon countries have been slow to join the Cittaslow movement, yet at the same time, practice many Slow principles through activities and policies such as farmers markets, energy-efficiency, programs, complete streets, etc., the research question for this study is, “Are small towns in the US ready to explicitly embrace the ‘Slow’ movement?” This study will use mixed-methods design with quantitative data analyzed through descriptive statistics and qualitative data, through content analysis. Results will be used to gauge US town interest in joining CUSA.
