Abstract
This research explores overtourism in Malta, focusing on the contrasting impacts of dominant and non-dominant tourist markets. Employing time-series analysis over four decades, it assesses the economic, social, and environmental implications using indicators like RGDP, HDI, CPI, and CO2 emissions. The study adopts both a priori and a posteriori market segmentation, revealing varied effects of market interactions and aggregations, interpreted through a symbiotic framework of mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. Results indicate mutualistic benefits in RGDP and HDI from certain market combinations, with initial parasitic effects on CPI eventually stabilizing. This comprehensive approach offers nuanced insights for strategic, market-specific tourism management, emphasizing the importance of tailored solutions in addressing overtourism challenges in Malta and similar destinations.
