SCALING THE OUTDOOR RECREATION ECONOMY: Economic impact of rock climbing at Farley Ledges on Franklin County
Citations
Abstract
Farley Ledges in Erving, Massachusetts, is renowned for its premier rock climbing in the Northeast. Over recent decades, Farley Ledges, alongside other climbing destinations nationwide, has witnessed a notable surge in the popularity of the sport. This uptick in interest has translated into heightened visitation to climbing areas and consequential economic impacts on the surrounding communities. This study examines the economic impact of rock climbers visiting Farley Ledges on Franklin County. Consistent with past economic impact reports on rock climbing, the findings reveal climbers are highly educated, have substantial incomes, and are actively involved in protecting the climbing areas they visit. The research estimates climbers visiting Farley Ledges spend over half a million dollars annually in the county. This spending leads to the creation of about five jobs, about a quarter-million dollars in labor income, and more than half a million dollars in total economic impact. Recommendations are provided to leverage this economic potential by addressing the needs of climbers, residents, businesses, and the greater outdoor recreation community in Western Massachusetts.
