Abstract
This project focuses on the planning and development of a community cultural center on the northwest shore of Richmond County, New York. The proposed site, Sailors' Snug Harbor, is an 85-acre historic property originally established in the 19th century as a home for indigent mariners and later acquired by the City of New York in the 1970s. The concept involves converting the site into a public park while adaptively reusing its landmark buildings to create a center for performing, visual, and plastic arts. The initiative is supported by the New York City Department of Parks, local citizens, and community arts organizations, and is managed by the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Inc. This project holds both personal and professional significance for the student, combining a lifelong connection to Richmond County’s history with expertise in site design and adaptive reuse gained through graduate studies, making it a meaningful culmination of their academic work.
