Abstract
Background: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) education mandates clinical rotations where students, however shortage of preceptors creates challenges in securing clinical placements. The purpose of this project was to explore the perceptions of the APRN program leadership on obtaining preceptors for students and to understand current and needed interventions for addressing the problem.
Methods: A survey was emailed to Deans and Faculty of APRN programs in the New England area, regarding their perceptions of the preceptors’ shortage, what provisions they have made to alleviate the problem, and whether they pay for preceptors.
Results: Ten members responded to the survey. Providing continuing education, maintaining relationships between the preceptors/ institutions and recertification credits were utilized. Only two of the ten schools surveyed paid preceptors and private schools had more administrative support than public schools.
Conclusions: Competitions from other schools, lack of support for preceptors by healthcare organizations, preceptors’ attitude towards precepting, preceptor burnout, scarcity of specialties, were some of the noted barriers. Impacts included decreased enrollment, delayed graduation or withdrawal from NP programs and adjustment of program sequence by some schools to align with the number of available preceptors.
