Elevating Open: Uniting Equity, Inclusion, and Antiracism through Collaborative Programs

Session Abstract

The Community College Consortium for OER at Open Education Global is a community of practice for educators aspiring to expand access and empower students, particularly those who are marginalized, to succeed through the use of OER and open educational practices. The membership includes hundreds of community and technical colleges who collaborate to learn from each other and develop equitable and sustainable programs that are inclusive and welcoming to all students and educators.

The panel will spotlight open education programs that prioritize the creation of equitable, inclusive, and antiracist learning through the use of open pedagogy and instructional design, with dedicated faculty, equity consultants, and advisory coaches, to name a few. The featured programs include the Remixing Open Textbooks through an Equity Lens project (ROTEL) from Massachusetts, the Targeted Pathways program from Oregon, and the Open for Antiracism program (OFAR) from California.

The panel will spotlight open education programs that prioritize the creation of equitable, inclusive, and antiracist learning through the use of open pedagogy and instructional design, with dedicated faculty, equity consultants, and advisory coaches, to name a few. Attendees will be prompted to identify components of the programs they can incorporate into their own work and institutions through polls and discussion. Featured programs include:

-The Remixing Open Textbooks through an Equity Lens (ROTEL) project promotes textbook affordability, student success, and inclusion and equity to benefit students, particularly minoritized students at our six institutions.

-The Targeted Pathways program redesigns high-enrollment courses in Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Human Development/Family Services that lead to in-demand occupations where high quality openly licensed course materials with an equity lens are not currently available.

-The Open for Antiracism (OFAR) program supports community college faculty to transform their classrooms to be antiracist through OER and open pedagogy. OFAR emerged as a response to the growing awareness of structural racism in higher education and provides a supportive, safe environment where faculty can learn about antiracist teaching and apply it in their own classrooms.

Presenter Bios

Moderator:

Heather Blicher is the Program Director for the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER), a regional node of Open Education Global. Heather’s priority is to advance the field of open education at community and technical colleges across North America by building community among members and providing support to practitioners in developing and leading the next phase of open education innovation.

Panelists:

Millie Gonzalez is the Library Dean of Framingham State University and a Principal Investigator (PI) of the Remixing Open Textbooks Through an Equity Lens (ROTEL) program funded by the federal Department of Education's Open Textbook Pilot grant program. She also is the co-chair of the MA OER Advisory Council which leads statewide open education efforts with the MA Department of Higher Education.

Michelle Culley is the Grant Project Manager for Open Oregon Educational Resources. In this role, she manages a federal grant that supports the development of openly-licensed, targeted pathway materials with an equity lens for Sociology, Human Development/Family Studies, and Criminal Justice courses. Her TESOL background and development of an open textbook for ESOL students give her perspective on creating course materials for historically underserved students.

Maritez Apigo has had the honor of teaching English and ESL over the last two and a half decades. Currently, she is an English Professor at Contra Costa College. As a leader in online education, OER, and ZTC, she trains and mentors faculty at the college, district, and state levels. Statewide she serves as a Course Facilitator and the Lead Advisory Coach on the leadership team of Open for Antiracism (OFAR) and as a California Community Colleges ZTC Program Curriculum Developer, Training Coordinator, and Course Facilitator.
