Selecting and creating OER for a new class

Session Abstract

I will explain my process for selecting and creating OER for a basic American history course. I will cover making the decision to go with open materials, assessing and selecting the text, creating classroom materials that are interesting engaging. This includes video, text, documents, and three-dimensional items. I will cover what worked and what did not.

Keywords

Open Textbook, Created materials, Student engagement.

Objectives of the Session

They will know my thoughts and process for choosing an open text,

They will know my process for creating and adopting classroom materials using open sources.

Full Description of the Session

First, I will discuss the decision to use OER for this class, followed by the process of finding and evaluating the text. Since the text supplements the classroom lessons, I also need to find and make suitable materials to be used in the classroom. I like using a synesthetic approach, that is, using as many of the senses as possible. This requires finding and curating materials that are interesting, engaging, and suitable for class projects. I will discuss the process for finding and evaluating on-line materials, videos and three-dimensional objects. I will also go into making my own classroom resources, and where to find sources for this. Some of the subject matter is: archaeology, documents, and the US Constitution. Video resources are abundant, but need to be carefully curated. Some of these are not in the student’s comfort zone, and I have them do reaction papers. To wrap up, I will discuss what worked and what did not.
