Cutting Edge, Valid, School-Based Interventions: 2020-2021 Year in Review
(2021-01-01) Horton, Dawn; Griffith, Catherine; Dimmitt, Carey
School counselors need to be aware of the most cutting-edge evidence-based practices, though locating quality interventions can be a complex process. The presenters of this session have gladly done the heavy lifting, and will provide a review of the best of the best in outcomes research published over the past year. With the goal of linking research to practice, we will discuss the potential integration of these studies into comprehensive guidance programs. Special attention also will be given to the search process itself, with a brief review of the markers of quality research, as well as an overview of the journals, clearinghouses, and search terms school counseling practitioners can utilize themselves in locating future school-based interventions.

Evidence-Based School Counseling: An Evolving Paradigm
    (2022-01-01) Zyromski, Brett; Dimmitt, Carey
Evidence-based school counseling (EBSC) has too often been an approach defined by student-centered interventions delivered from a deficit perspective. What would happen if we stepped back and applied the same lens to the systems that are creating the barriers to student success in the first place? For example, the disproportionality of behavior referrals and suspensions of BIPOC populations is a data point that illustrates a system issue. How would the EBSC lens offer ways to deconstruct that system? Attendees will discuss and contribute to the evolution of the EBSC model and articulate approaches for using it to deconstruct racist educational systems while at the same time investing in strengths-based approaches to fostering student life success.

    (2021-01-01) Dimmitt, Carey; Zyromski, Brett
The term "evidence-based" is now widely used in education, but what does it mean for school counseling? And how can we make sure that we are challenging and expanding the construct to make sure that it accurately reflects the profession and our current contexts? This session will provide an overview of the basics of EBSC, and also provide some lively discussion about how to update our ideas about what this can/should/could look like.
