A Newfoundland Light & Power Co. Limited project to build a 1,000 kW hydroelectric plant in 1981 required measures to replace lost Ouananiche spawning grounds. After studying various alternatives, it was agreed a spawning canal would be provided in the tailrace to replace the lost spawning ground while ensuring minimal effect on plant operations.
